Illegal removal of fossils at Riversleigh section of Australian Fossil Mammal Sites

Small-scale disturbance and possible removal of fossils by visitors is anecdotal. Evidence to substantiate this claim is being monitored.

To ensure visitors are well informed that removal of fossil material is not permitted at Riversleigh, park management activities undertaken by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services now includes fossil health check monitoring and periodic park surveillance. These activities will record and investigate any occurrence of theft.

Updated signage is also being installed to provide visitors with a better understanding of the importance of fossils and the threat posed to their Outstanding Universal Value if illegally removed.

Fossil theft is not considered to be an ongoing threat. This threat is considered very low.
