Queensland

The Queensland Heritage Register is a comprehensive and representative record of the state’s significant places of historic cultural heritage. There are 1,784 places entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.

This includes 48 places added in 2018–2020.

Of those, 29 newly-registered places are schools, nominated through the Department of Education’s proactive Queensland Schools Heritage Strategy, a long-term project to conserve significant state schools. During Stage 3 of the project (2014–2020), 72 new schools were entered, adding to a total of 102 Department of Education schools on the register.

Places entered from community nominations demonstrate community values and sustained interest in protecting the state’s heritage. They illustrate the diverse range of historic places valued by Queenslanders, from industrial complexes to public parks of horticultural significance.

Fire destroyed 2 of the 4 places removed from the register between 2018 and 2020. Extreme flooding accounted for another. One place was removed as it did not satisfy 1 or more of the cultural heritage criteria. Provisions in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 allow for the removal of Heritage places from the Queensland Heritage Register that no longer fulfil the criteria for state-level heritage significance.
