Queensland

As at March 2020, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database recorded 52,806 site locations in Queensland. The database is an information tool established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage legislation to help assess the cultural heritage values of an area.

Since July 2015, 9,163 new locations have been recorded on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database.

About 56% of new locations in Queensland include stone artefact scatters. These range from small scatters of a few stone flakes through to extensive scatters containing many different artefact types.

The next highest site type category is scarred trees (about 9.5% of new locations). Scarred trees are trees that have been scarred by cultural activities.

Many sites on the database contain more than 1 attribute. For example, an art site may also contain an artefact scatter and be an important story place as well.

As there are no legislative requirements to report cultural heritage site locations, the total number of new locations recorded on the database does not represent the total number of new cultural heritage site locations recorded in Queensland.

Due to internal adjustments in regional boundaries since 2015, the total number of sites added for each region are not reported.
