Key finding
The Queensland public transport sector is performing better than the target benchmarks, particularly in South East Queensland. In general, public transport use is stable in Queensland and the addition of new networks increases public transport use.
Travel times may have environmental, economic and social impacts. Networks with a high percentage of reliable travel times indicate better economic and social outcomes and reduced impacts on the environment.
Good road network productivity is driven by reliable travel times compared to a benchmark value. The road system network is performing worse than the target benchmark by 1%–4%. Considering the growth in population, traffic and economic development, particularly in South East Queensland (SEQ), and the fact that the target was unchanged from the previous year, this result could generally be considered as unchanged in real terms.
Decreases in performance were marginal when comparing 2016–2017 to the previous financial year:
- off-peak travel time reliability 88% (89% in 2015–16)
- AM travel time reliability 78% (80%)
- PM travel time reliability 71% (74%).
TransLink data indicates stable public transport use, particularly in SEQ. The addition of new networks increases public transport use.
Public transport in SEQ is performing better than the target reliability benchmark by 2%–4%. Marginal changes in on-time performance are noted between 2016–2017 financial year and the previous year:
- train travel time reliability 94.7% in 2016–2017 (97.9% in 2015–2016)
- bus travel time reliability 94.6% (94.6%)
- tram travel time reliability 99.9% (99.7%).
