Key finding
The efficiency of the daily road network commute is marginally changing. Road network performance is unchanged when taking population growth, traffic and economic development into account.
Marginal decreases in road network performance were noted in the 2016–2017 financial year compared to the previous year:
- Average travel time during the morning peak hour was 11.3 minutes per 10 kilometres in 2016–2017 (11.1 minutes per 10 kilometres travelled in 2015–2016).
- Average afternoon peak hour travel times were 11.9 minutes per 10 kilometres (11.6 minutes per 10 kilometres in 2015–2016).
The road system network is performing at generally the same levels considering the increases in population, traffic and economic growth particularly in South East Queensland. It can be assumed from this performance that the current traffic efficiency compared to previous years is not significantly further increasing greenhouse gas emissions that could impact on climate change.
