Queensland

The Queensland Heritage Register is a comprehensive and representative record of the state’s significant places of historic cultural heritage. There are 1,741 places entered in the Queensland Heritage Register. This includes 27 places added in 2016–2017.

The 5 places removed from the register were all places destroyed prior to 2012. New provisions in the Heritage Act introduced in 2011 enabled their removal.

Many of the 66 places entered in the register in 2012–2015 are the legacy of proactive, collaborative state-wide projects. These include the Queensland Schools Heritage Strategy, a long-term project to conserve significant state schools; the State-wide Heritage Survey (2005–2010), conducted to address regional gaps; and ‘Our Shared Heritage’ (2009–2010), a Queensland Heritage Council community engagement initiative. While the State-wide Heritage Survey’s concentration on areas such as the Wide Bay Burnett means important regional places are better represented, western Queensland remains relatively under-represented.

Places entered from community nominations demonstrate community values and interest in protecting the state’s heritage and illustrate the diverse range of historic places valued by Queenslanders, from modernist architecture to border survey markers.
