Queensland
As at August 2017, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database recorded 43,643 site locations in Queensland. The database is an information tool established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage legislation to help assess the cultural heritage values of an area.
Since July 2015, 1106 new locations have been recorded on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database.
About 62% of new locations include stone artefact scatters. The next highest site type category is middens (about 6.5% of new locations). Middens are the remains of campsites where fresh and saltwater shellfish were cooked and eaten. They may also contain discarded stone tools, charcoal, and provide evidence of occupation and give a good insight into how people lived.
As there are no legislative requirements to report cultural heritage site locations, the total number of new locations recorded on the database does not represent the total number of new cultural heritage site locations recorded in Queensland.
North
At 30 June 2015, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database held 11,827 site locations for the North Cultural Heritage Region.
Since July 2015, a further 298 locations have been added to the database in this region.
About 27% of new locations include stone artefact scatters as the site type. Middens are the next highest site type (15%).
The database is an information tool established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage legislation to help assess the cultural heritage values of an area.
As there are no legislative requirements to report cultural heritage site locations, the total number of new locations recorded on the database does not represent the total number of new cultural heritage site locations recorded in the region.
Central
At 30 June 2015, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database held 15,654 site locations for Central Cultural Heritage region.
A further 93 new locations have been recorded since July 2015.
About 61% of new locations include stone artefact scatters as the site type. Cultural places, including story places and resource areas, are the next highest site type at about 22% of newly-recorded locations.
The database is an information tool established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage legislation to help assess the cultural heritage values of an area.
As there are no legislative requirements to report cultural heritage site locations, the total number of new locations recorded on the database does not represent the total number of new cultural heritage site locations recorded in the region.
South
At 30 June 2015, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage database held 16,162 site locations for South Cultural Heritage Region.
A further 715 new locations have been recorded on the database in this region since July 2015.
About 76% of new locations include stone artefact scatters as the site type. Earth features (or hearths) are the next highest site type at about 6.5% of the newly-recorded locations.
