Key finding
About 640,000t of construction and demolition waste generated interstate was transported to Queensland landfills for disposal in 2016–2017.
Construction and demolition waste is non-putrescible (non-rotting) waste arising from construction or demolition activity. It may include materials such as brick, timber, concrete and steel. This waste has potential for resource recovery.
Data on general waste from interstate sources was collected for the first time in 2013–2014.
About 640,000t of construction and demolition waste was received from interstate sources in 2016–2017. This was up about 146,000t from 2015–2016 and up 380,000t from 2014–2015. The transfer of waste from other states is driven by lower disposal costs in Queensland.
