Key finding
Between 2012–2013 and 2016–2017 the amounts of glass and plastic sent for recycling by councils increased by about 22,600t and 6,500t respectively, while the amount of steel cans sent for recycling declined by about 600t.
Household waste (municipal solid) is waste generated by domestic activities. It includes waste collected from households via kerbside services, from public place bins, or self-hauled by residents to council facilities.
The main components of recovered household waste are green waste, paper and packaging and items salvaged from domestic self-haul. The 335,000t of paper and packaging sent for recycling by councils in 2016-2017 was the greatest amount reported so far.
