Key finding

Emissions from the industrial processes sector increased 11% between 2005 and 2016 due largely to increased use of replacements for ozone-depleting substances.

Queensland’s industrial processes sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have grown steadily from 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 1990 reaching 6 million tonnes CO2e in 2016.

Industrial processes involve activities from a range of production processes such as the metal industry, mineral industry through cement and glass production and chemical industry. This sector also includes refrigeration and air-conditioning. GHG emissions from halocarbons, a replacement for ozone-depleting substances used in refrigeration and air-conditioning, have increased significantly from an almost zero base in 1990 to 13 MtCO2e. Since 2005 to 2016, emissions from refrigeration and air-conditioning in homes, cars and industrial air-conditioning have increased by 179%.
