Key finding

Total motor vehicle travel (cars, trucks, buses), expressed as total vehicle kilometres travelled, shows continued and sustained growth over time.

Total motor vehicle travel (cars, trucks, buses), expressed as total vehicle kilometres travelled, shows continued and sustained growth over time. The amount of travel directly affects emissions from motor vehicles—i.e. when total travel goes up, emissions generally go up as well. New emission reduction technology may offset—or even reverse—these trends for specific air pollutants, but not for greenhouse gases.

The total vehicle kilometres travelled has increased since 2002, from 34 billion kilometres then to 52 billion kilometres in 2016. More people and more vehicles on the road drive the total vehicle kilometres upwards.
