Key finding

There were almost 6 times the number of light commercial vehicles than heavy vehicles registered in 2017.  The number of light commercial vehicles registered has almost doubled since 2001, whereas the number of heavy vehicles has increased by 62 per cent in the same period.

Commercial vehicles potentially have greater emissions that affect public health and the environment. Commercial vehicles include light and heavy vehicles.

There were more registrations of both light and heavy commercial vehicles in the last reporting period (31 January 2016 to 31 January 2017). Light commercial vehicles increased the most, with about 22,000 new registrations—a 3% increase on the previous year (31 January 2015 to 31 January 2016).  Heavy vehicle registrations increased by 1% between 31 January 2016 and 31 January 2017. Light commercial vehicle registration has increased by 95% since 2001 while number of heavy vehicles registered has gone up 62% over the same period.
