Invasive species and pathogens pressure on Fraser Island

Key finding
The introduction of invasive plants, animals and pathogens to the Fraser Island World Heritage Area is having a negative impact on some values.
Several non-endemic species (plants and animals) are present on Fraser Island. The pest and weed distribution is limited in extent and the severity of the threat is variable, with only minor impacts on the attributes of the World Heritage Outstanding Universal Value. Management programs have actively targeted some of the key high-risk pest species.
In addition, pathogens such as Myrtle Rust represent an unknown current and future risk to the World Heritage value. While management actions to address the threat of pathogens is, in part, dealt within the national park pest strategy, the long-term threat of Myrtle Rust continues to be assessed and monitored at whole of state level.
This threat is considered low.
