Key finding

World Heritage values of Gondwana Rainforests of Australia are maintained through a mosaic of sites.

Gondwana Rainforests of Australia (information applies statewide, map locations are for reference only)

A challenge for the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia is managing the long-term conservation and continuation of biological processes.

Questions related to the small size and scattered fragments of some of the sections of the area for the long-term conservation and continuation of natural biological processes have been raised, however this is compensated by the reasonable proximity of areas, corridors of semi-natural habitats between sites and intensive management of values.

Since inscription in 1986, there have been significant additions to the protected area estate in both New South Wales and Queensland. An extension of the area was included on Australia’s Tentative List in May 2010.

The level of legislative protection provided for World Heritage areas will minimise direct human influence and enable the continuation of natural biological processes.
