Queensland’s historic heritage places, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage, and World Heritage properties, contribute to our sense of place, reinforce our identity, and help define what it means to be a Queenslander.

Queensland’s most important historic heritage places are entered in the Queensland Heritage Register.

The heritage theme is divided into three sub-themes: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; historic; and world.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have distinct identities, histories and cultural traditions. Their heritage includes areas, objects, and evidence of archaeological or historic significance of occupation of an area of Queensland.

Queensland’s heritage comprises places from our past that we want to keep, respect and pass on to future generations. They reflect and evoke special meaning for us as individuals, and as members of communities.

Queensland is one of the most naturally diverse places on earth, and has five world heritage areas considered by UNESCO as amongst the most outstanding natural or cultural heritage places on earth.
