Queensland
The Queensland Heritage Register records the state’s most important historic cultural heritage places. There are 1,717 places of state significance in the Queensland Heritage Register.
Many of the 66 new places entered in the Register since 2012 are the legacy of proactive, collaborative statewide projects. These include the Queensland Schools Heritage Strategy, a long-term project to conserve significant state schools; the Statewide Heritage Survey (2005-2010), conducted to address regional gaps; and ‘Our Shared Heritage’ (2009-2010), a Queensland Heritage Council initiative inviting community suggestions for the Register. These projects have ensured that new Register places are located throughout the state, from Myendetta Homestead in the south-west to the Meringa Sugar Experiment Station in the far north. The Statewide Heritage Survey’s concentration on areas such as the Wide Bay Burnett means important regional places are better represented in the Register. However, western Queensland remains relatively under-represented, given its influence on the historical development of Queensland.
Places entered from community nominations demonstrate community values and interest in protecting the state’s heritage, and illustrate the diverse range of historic places valued by Queenslanders, from modernist architecture to border survey markers.
The five places removed from the Register were all places destroyed prior to 2012. New provisions in the Heritage Act introduced in 2011 enabled their removal.
